Balancing Conservation and Heritage: Alberta Wildlife Federation Calls for Science-Based Feral Horse Management

EDMONTON, December 16, 2024 – The Alberta Wildlife Federation (AWF) remains steadfast in its commitment to conserving and sustainably managing Alberta’s natural habitats and wildlife populations. The issue of feral horse management is both complex and emotional. However, addressing it with science-based solutions is crucial to protecting the health of Alberta’s ecosystems.

The Challenge

Feral horses, while an iconic part of Alberta’s landscape, pose ecological challenges when populations are not effectively managed. Overgrazing, competition with native species such as deer, elk, and bighorn sheep, and damage to critical habitats – particularly in sensitive rangeland and riparian zones – are pressing concerns that demand attention.

Our Position

The Alberta Wildlife Federation advocates for a balanced and science-driven approach to feral horse management which includes the following:

  • Protect Native Species and Habitats: Prioritizing the health of Alberta’s native ecosystems and ensuring sustainable conditions for wildlife to thrive.

  • Use Science-Based Methods: Advocating for humane and effective management strategies, including population monitoring, fertility control, and relocation programs where feasible.

  • Engage Stakeholders: Collaborating with Indigenous communities, landowners, government agencies, and conservation groups to incorporate diverse perspectives and knowledge.

  • Promote Education and Awareness: Encouraging Albertans to understand the ecological impacts of feral horses and the importance of proactive, responsible management.

The AWF stand in support of the Alberta Government’s “Feral Horse Management Framework” as a guideline for addressing these challenges.

A Shared Responsibility

Alberta’s wild spaces and wildlife are a shared heritage. Managing feral horses responsibly is crucial to preserving the integrity of our ecosystems for future generations.
